When choosing the right ornamental trees for your garden there are many factors to consider. At Four Seasons we have implemented hundreds of planting projects in and around Oxford, Wallingford, Aylesbury, High Wycombe and the surrounding areas.

Recently we have completed a scheme where the client wanted an informal group of smaller trees that provide a colourful mix in front of a fairly solid large screen of Laurels. The evergreen backdrop is ideal for helping white and pale flower and bark colours to really stand out. So, we selected some of the birch species with white and peeling bark to give particularly good winter colour. Species included Betula utilis and Betula nigra which were planted as multi-stems for maximum effect.

To give good summer interest we used a couple of the Snowy mespils, Amelanchier canadensis and lamarckii, both beautiful ornamentals with profuse dispalays of delicate white flower in the summer months and fairly tolerant of most soil conditions in our area.

We can advise and carry out planting projects ranging from woodland copses and large shelterbelts to single ornamental specimens to provide a focal point in your garden. Careful attention to selecting the right species is important. Trees need to be suitable for the soil type, aspect and have sufficient space to develop properly.

Of course, there are also the all important aesthetic considerations too. We take a lot care in helping you to select the best species for your project.

Another recent scheme also involved an informal group planting at the far end of a large lawn where we wanted to draw the eye towards a colourful focal point. For this purpose we used a couple of the flowering crab apples – Malus Rudolph and Everest.

These are tough trees that do well on most soils, one with a red flower and one with white and both producing good Autumn colour and berries that last through into winter. These trees mix well with the ornamental Hawthorns, which again generally add Autumn colour and berries.

Its really worth considering trees with Autumn and Winter berries as they can really bring in birdlife to a garden which is a fantastic thing to have in your garden. Many of the Thrush family including Redwings will visit gardens in the Winter to find berries.

So, if you have a tree planting job that you would like to do in your garden, we would be very pleased to hear from you.
